Grooming Tips
Doing the shoot for the first time ?? Here are some tips to get you started ….

Clients that invest in professional photos, often have them displayed on the walls of their home for years to come, so it is worth giving outfit choices some consideration. I get asked about this pretty regularly! Here are a few tips to consider …

  • First and foremost you should feel comfortable. Choose clothes that are ‘you’. It sounds obvious, but opt for clothing that you’d enjoy wearing on days you were not booked in for a shoot.
  • Avoid large logos, heavy branding and loud patterns.
  • Avoid items that crease easily. Also, iron the outfit. It’s nicer to be prim than to look careless.
  • Bring accessories along to the shoot (hats are a personal favourite). They lend themselves perfectly to a ‘pop’ of colour – and enable me to get a more diverse selection of images. Scarves, stolls, sunglasses, jackets, costume jewellery work well too.
  • Group shots look great when the individuals are wearing clothing of a similar style and colour palette. But think coordinating rather than matching.
  • Consider your home decor. If you have a specific colour scheme at home, this can be worth considering, if the images will ultimately be printed and framed on the walls.
Makeup Tips

When having your portrait taken, there are a few areas where a little advanced preparation can make a huge difference. Remember, these aren’t rules but general tips to help you think of ideas for preparing for your shoot …

  • Just choose what suits your lifestyle, and current beauty regimen, and go from there!
  • A pimple is very easy to cover with makeup, but scabs, wounds and flaky patches are more tricky. As soon as possible, stop picking at your skin, scratch and squeeze at every bump and flake on your face, it will spoil your complexion.
  • It would be a great idea to get rid of any unwanted or extra hair on your face. We use very high-resolution cameras and hair tends to show up however small they are !!
  • If you decide to have your eyebrows, upper lip and cheeks waxed or threaded, be sure to schedule the appointment for at least a few days before your photo shoot. Else, an eyebrow trim/touch up at home could be done a day or two before the shoot.
  • When you are applying makeup, it is necessary to start with a clean palette. Wash your face, then follow with a moisturizer.
  • You could put on a coat of foundation on the face and neck that matches your skin tone and does not look patchy on the skin.
  • Apply your concealer if there are blemishes or visible spots on the face.
  • Use a very light blush and eyeshadow to suit your outfits.
  •  Apply lip balm. Dot your lip with lip balm to smooth them and reduce crevices.
  • Use a lip liner. Choose a colour that matches your lips, not your lipstick.
  • While applying lipstick, pick up the lipstick and apply the colour, starting at the centre of the upper lip and moving outward toward one corner. Make sure that it does not bleed outside.
  • Neat, healthy hair is youthful and vibrant. If it’s been a while since your last haircut, even a subtle trim can make a world of difference. It is advisable to condition your hair if possible. A small wind can make dry hair look bad.
  • Having even layers of nail polish is extremely important. Getting a clean and crisp nail polish line will enhance the photograph. It’s worthwhile to maintain clean and well-painted nails and nail paints that match your outfit.
  • Make sure the nail paint is not chipped.
  • If you go the waxing route, give yourself a few days to heal before your shoot.
  • Shaving can be done the night before. Be sure to get your hands, legs and underarms cleaned, if you’ll be wearing a sleeveless or short dresses.
